Acrylic Nails Will Not Harm Your Natural Nails, But…
Contrary to what other people are saying, it is not true that acrylic nails can cause damage to your natural nails. They are in fact safe to use but misuse is the one that causes damages.
A person who is wearing acrylic nails should ensure that there is no gap between them and the natural nails; lest, discoloration will take place, as well as coarsening which will make them rough and harsh in texture. To avoid creating gaps between the acrylic and the natural nail, you should avoid bumping the acrylic nail or it will slightly separate from the natural. When this happens, a moist and warm environment will be produced between them and it will likely encourage the growth of fungi and bacteria. This may result to infection.
You should also avoid wearing acrylic nails for a prolonged period. Remember that your natural nails should be allowed to breathe freely so they won’t become moist. Putting on fake nails for a long period will suffocate the natural ones. This is definitely not a healthy practice.
You also better choose a reputable salon that will apply the acrylic nails on you. There are salons that use tools which are not sanitized. Be cautious of salons such as these because if those tools will be used on you, you may develop nail fungus. If ever you will be doing the task by yourself, make sure that everything you will use is clean.
When you notice discoloration on your nails, as well as redness and excessive peeling on your skin, it will be best to consult a dermatologist at once so that proper treatment can be applied. However, always remember that prevention is still better than cure. You should avoid the things that will cause damage to your natural nails as early as possible.

Completely untrue. The constant buffing of the acrylic nail and your natural nails causes your natural nails to become weak, thin and brittle.

acrylic nails do leave your nails thin, brittle and soft, this is because certain people buff them down too much or when you pick the nails off a layer of nail comes off with it. im a nail technician and the nails i do are not like this because when i prepare the nail i do not do alot of buffing!

Nail Technician 15+ It is a myth nails need to breath, nails respire they don’t breath. In order for anything to breathe there must be an exchange of gasses. (O2 In Co2 Out) Acrylic nails don’t damage your nails but incorrection aplication and tecnique does. Overbuffing the nails makes the nails become weak. It is not enitrely the fault of nail tech’s as clients don’t respect their nails the same way they do their hair. Demanding nails that don’t break and not returning as advised. Refusing to use cuticle oil or any form of aftercare. Not prepared to pay for quality work so the tech rushes to get you out the door. A good quality service will take aleast one hour. One should allow 1hr 30mins. Opt for techs who don’t use elecric files but having said that techs who use the regular nail files can create just as much damage. Select the best you can afford and go for quality. A good tech will always give you a sample of her work. If your nails are covered for a long period of time your body may sense your nails are strong and will use the bodies resources elsewhere. Once you remove the nails within a short period of time they should return to there orginal condition. If they weren’t good before you put the product on and performed no aftercare then your nails will be just as bad when you remove the product. Worried about overbuffing it can be reduced by having the nails done with duel free forms. The finished nails require no buffing.

I hate how everyone is saying how it damages your nail. Acrylics and the glue themselves don’t, the nail tech does. There are places called “chop shops” which are just some inexperienced nail techs looking for money. They use a nail drill, which weakens your nails and drills them down so they are only 1/2 of what they were. Then when you come back to get refills they pull them off, or drill them off, which is THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO! They should soak them in acetone and buff and file them until they fall off. So, if you don’t want your nails to be ruined for life, spend $10- $15 more and get them done where they don’t drill your nail to get them on, and where they don’t pull them off or drill them off.

can anyone tell me how long it is before I have to have fill-ins after the nails have been fitted, and if one is ripped off by accident does it hurt?

the length of time between fills depends on how fast your nails grow. I usually have to go before week 2-3 or they start too look funny with the gap at the bottom and too long.
Ripping one off quickly on accident would be very painful, but highly unlikely, they are practically cemented to your real nails. Even when you remove them slowly, it feels like your nails are being ripped off your fingers. Not a pleasant feeling.
Catching the tips on door handles and things like that is also very painful and that happens frequently, especially until you learn to be more careful with them. One time I snagged them on the door of the clothes dryer and they were sore for two days. Sometimes the tips will break when that stuff happens, which is annoying because you have to have the whole nail redone.

That is untrue when they buff the nail to make the pink gel stick they take off a layer of your nail after a while when the nail has completly grow bak then they are fine but until then your natural nails look really bad.
