Manicure is a word more familiar to women than it is to men, but men are equally interested in manicures as women. Manicure is derived form Latin words manus meaning ‘hand’ and cura meaning ‘care’. Manicure is a cosmetic treatment for hands and nails. It can be performed by one at his or her home by himself or a beauty saloon under the expertise of professionals. Manicure specialist in most of the parts of world has to obtain license and has to follow some rules and regulations. Proper care of tools is a priority, as the skin is sometimes trimmed therefore; there is a risk of spreading of infections.

Manicures started a long way before, about 5000 years from the past; manicures have been in use in one or the other form. In Indian Subcontinent ‘henna’ was used for manicure. The modern manicure techniques started in about 18th century in Paris, since then French manicures are praised. The main reason of manicures is its various aesthetic reasons. They give a natural, perfect and healthy look to nails. In such manicure the tips of nails are painted white and rest of nails are polished in a light pink shade.

Nowadays manicures are something more than just aesthetic treatments. Now more concentration is given for proper removal of cuticles and applications of different oils and creams to balance the oils on base of nails.

Manicure is further extended and there are different types of manicures. One of the types of manicure is a ‘Hot Oil Manicure’. This type of manicure is used for cleansing and softening of cuticles by application of oils onto them. It is a good cure for dry skin and brittle nails as it leaves them soft and pliable after the manicure process. Different kinds of oils are used in this such as olive oil, mineral oil or usage of commercially prepared oils with an electric heater

The reason of manicures is to improve the look of the hands and nails. It is also used for cleaning, strengthening, shape and dressing of your nails. Manicure helps in deformation of nails and other damages like fragile tips, cuts, and nail splits. Health of skin is also improved due to increase in blood flow with the help of massage. The wrinkles on skin also vanish by manicure.

There are a number of tools used in the process of manicure. Some of the common tools are warm water and nail cutter, filer, buffers, cuticle knife and pusher and orange stick. Some of the common supplies used during manicure are cotton swabs, soap, cuticle remover, cream and oil, lotion for massage, nail cleaners, polishes, polish remover, sanitizing sprays and hand towels.

Manicure consists of the following simple steps: removal of nail polish, filing of nails, cleansing of hands with liquid soap, cleansing of cuticles, application of cream, pushing of cuticle with orange stick, massage of hands and finally application of nail polish for a natural look. Easy process of manicure makes it ideal to be done at home.
